I've got a lovely Daphne that is thriving in a north facing patch which gets a splash of sun in the morning.

Most Hydrangeas would do well and the sky pencil holly.

Ruth that holly is Ilex crenata. (Not seen it under the name of sky pencil so thought this might help.) Grows slowly, in a narrow tall column.

Sarcocca suckers profusely but is beautiful when in flower. The scent is lovely.

I love Skimmia for that job. scented flwoers, berries if you get female ones and there is a male nearby or there are the odd variety that are both male and female.
dwarf weigela, Azalea, Rhododendron, Sarcoccocca, all come to mind.
