Is buddleia yellow ball less vigourous then the purple one? I find my buddleia’s turn into great thugs and was (hoping) wondering the yellow ball variety is maybe less of a thug? Probably wishful thinking…..

I removed mine after 2 years as it had grown far too big for the raised bed it was in. Trying to keep it pruned was very hard work due to the rapid growth rate!

I recently bought a short buddleia from a garden centre. It had plenty of flowers and has been a great success so far. I can't remember how tall they grow and I idiotically picked one up without a label. It remains small, i know that.

Oh it seems I might have to look out for a more compact variety? Have been gifted two buddleia globosa, orange ball buddleia and will put them in my cottage garden border but keep an eye on them. Thanks for your replies.

Your photo is Buddleja X weyeriana 'Sungold'. It's quite vigorous: in the right conditions it will grow very large - 4m x 4m. It can be treated in much the same way as Buddleja davidii. It's an F2 hybrid of B. globosa and B. davidii.
Buddleja globosa has smaller, tighter balls and is usually very orange. It flowers earlier and shouldn't be pruned in the spring. Very vigorous and soon becomes the size of a small tree.
The new compact varieties should be approached with caution. Some are okay, including the Buzz series. Many are complete rubbish - short-lived, disease-prone, poor performers. I think I've had nine different members of the Flutterby and Dreaming series die on me now.
The pedant in me must remind everyone the only acceptable spelling is Buddleja with a J.

Hello all, have had a change of mind as can not cope with yet another vigorous shrub that needs pruning every year. Have got 6 buddlejas already so maybe time to look at something else. Thanks for your comments and advice.

Ams, ever considered a Pittosporum? There are so many varieties, lots of different shades of green and leaf forms.

Hmm.. thanks for the suggestion. Was after a shrub with yellow/orange blooms that would be happy at back of border.

Hypericum (Rose of Sharon) perhaps. Kerria, but that does spread out underground a fair bit.

Thank you Shirley but I’ve got plenty of that and still trying to get rid of it.

Was thinking of a witch hazel to give me some interest in winter. Corylopsis pauciflora.

Oh yes, that's very attractive with the pale lemony yellow blooms. Go for it!

Probably not. We had one which was 3m by 3m. BUT we had a slightly different one which stayed small. They can be severely pruned to restrict growth though.
