Is anyone else missing Wilko's gardening stock? and their pet supplies? not to mention their household goods .... and DIY shelves? The march of time combined with arthritis has meant that making use of the goods in their DIY section has become of less interest but I used to enjoy filling my shopping bag with useful items for the house, treats for our dogs and something new for the garden. Today, as usual on New Year's Day, I have gone through my garden stock and made a shopping list for the beginning of this gardening year. In previous years I have happily headed into town in early January knowing that Christmas goods would be replaced with gardening stock on Wilko's shelves, most at reasonable prices too. I used to buy seed potatoes to chit and seeds to sow, mostly common varieties but as an amateur gardener that suited me fine. This year I don't think I have an option other than to shop at garden centres which seem to cater for far more experienced gardeners than me, and pay more for the pleasure. Or am I wrong, is there a nationwide outlet comparable with Wilkos that has eluded me? I hope so! I really don't want to buy online, I much prefer to see and be able to examine what I am buying before parting with my £sd ;-)

we do have other outlets in Yorkshire, like Boyes and Yorkshire Trading. But I suspect you may have similar local stores offering discounted materials.

Aldi/Lidl also sell seeds and some gardening items from time to time.

My cat Bella used to enjoy Wilko's make of cat buiscuits. She'll have to manage on something else now.
I also missed their hardwear recently when I wanted some rings for a curtain pole. Now the nearest place where I can get them is B&Q in a town 15 miles away.

Poundland have gardening section, some good & some bad. In true Wilko tradition, some are dying and past their best, so vigilance is needed.

Home Bargains likewise

Thank you for your reply, Seaburngirl, we have had several stores selling discounted goods locally but they haven't survived for long, the overheads are so great.
I often buy 'garden' good in Aldi and Lidl, I am very pleased with the bird feeders I bought recently, but sadly their range isn't as wide or around for as long as Wilkos was.
Boyes and Yorkshire Trading sound like a good reason for we Southerners to head up North for a break periodically!
My hope is that Wilkos will do well enough on the internet to return to our town centres or something similar will fill the void. Regrettably new gardens are getting smaller and young folk have less time to tend them so the need for such 'gardening outlets' suited to less adept gardeners is shrinking. Perhaps the benefits of gardening will bring about a resurgence, I hope so, as Monty Don says, it is good exercise for the body and great therapy for mental health.

We found Wilkos pet aisle a boon for our dogs too, Hywel, it has been challenging finding outlets that supply similar products at such reasonable prices. The supermarkets are the most convenient but their range is nothing like as wide for toys, bedding, leads etc and treatments. My dog didn't survive his epileptic episode just before Christmas so we have one less to cater for, I miss him so much but my pocket is relieved to no longer be coping with the recent price hike in pet supplies.
Like you, I am also missing their hardware department, I need curtain hooks to replace the ones that have become brittle and broken, why are B&Q outlets so far out of town !?! Lol.

Some Wilko's stuff is on sale in The Range.

Thank you for reminding me, Grandad gar, I shall try Poundland although their range is smaller than Wilkos used to be. Home Bargains may be a good suggestion too, our newest branch isn't central and 8 miles away, not quite as convenient as the town centre just 3 miles down the road. I would love to turn the clocks back to when we had Woolworths and Wilkos in a bustling town centre, sigh.

I really miss wilko too. If I needed something it was my first place to look. I bought household, gardening tools and seeds and bulbs especially, and my parrot food which now has to be bought online. Nowhere I can get all the things in one shop. Sad but because of online purchasing which increased with the pandemic, high streets are diminishing so much.

i'd forgotten about the Range an B&M, they are about 5 miles away from us, so if I am in the area then I will pop in.

I hadn't thought of The Range, Owlboddy, we don't have a branch locally but have found there is one 20 miles away in Aylesbury. I'm thrilled to hear they stock some Wilko stuff so shall make them a visit with fingers tightly crossed and my garden shopping list in my pocket!
Like you, Thorneyside, Wlikos was my first port of call for so many things. When I was agile enough to do my own DIY I bought all the things I needed for redecorating, it was the 'go to' for anything that needed fixing. I used to buy a lot of my cleaning materials there too, and craft materials, not to mention Christmas paraphernalia. It was a regular stop on our weekly town shopping expeditions, and right next to a lovely coffee shop. Sadly that has gone too, in fact that shopping mall has closed and is being turned into student accommodation I believe. The internet is fantastic when it works but it has knocked the stuffing out of our town centres. That said, I am very glad it provides us with GoY, thank you so much for your help on this matter ..... wishing you all a wonderful 2024 brimming with many happy horticultural hours here and with your plants.

I also miss Wilco.I could buy various things there that were much more expensive elsewhere. Besides that I loved roaming the aisles and seldom came out empty handed.

In the same way I miss M&Co but that's another story and not for this website.

I agree about M&Co too. You are not alone there.
