sorry i lied, there is one more question!!!

my roses, i have 2 climbing roses. Do i need to cut these down to ground level or anything? I've just left them in previous years, but one of them hasnt flowered very well this year, although it looks healthy so i thought it may be because i wasnt looking after it correctly.

You can take off the tops of any excessively long growth to prevent wind rock, but any real pruning should be done end of Feb, beginning of March. You should also tie in new growths at this time of year.

I wouldn,t cut down to ground level! just tidy it up and tie it in that will stop wind rock and prevent water and frost from getting at the roots as Bamboo has said March is the best time I find to prune and give it a feed, my Dad always used to manure his roses! I dont as I cant stand the smell, there is plenty of rose food out there.

Well-rotted manure shouldn't smell, Maggy! I give mine some each year. It makes an amazing difference to them.
