Dying ceanothus
By Batman

We have two identical large, fast growing ceanothus plants, both of which were fiercely pruned last winter. Both grew plenty of new leaves and started to flower, but now one is thriving but the other seems to be dying - leaves are turning rusty brown and curling up; the bottom of the trunk is also turning reddy brown. Any ideas for how to save it?

I have a huge elderly Ceanothus which I just trim each year. This spring, half of it just died just as yours seems to be doing. There is no cure - sadly. They are not long-lived shrubs.

If you fiercely pruned it from the top then you effectively killed it.
