Hello, a tree question here, i have a large sycamore in the back garden, each year i take a few limbs off here and there and keep the crown to a manageble height, i keep records of all the trees in the garden that i prune, the date and when the sap starts to rise, eg last year the sap started riseing march 2nd 2009, in 2010 Feb 23rd and now it has started rising on the 17th dec 2010, it seems to be so early, it is really weeping badly and from the two limbs i have cut they have formed long icicles, whats your views on this? thanks julien.

the advice for pruning sycamore is to always do it in autumn, or in early spring, just before the buds swell. Although broadleaved trees are dormant in winter, that doesn't mean their circulatory system is entirely shut down - in the case of Acer, pruning at the recommended time is critical, and any major wounds should preferably be sealed to prevent excessive loss of xylem/phloem and nutrients.

Julien, the tree may not have fully prepared for winter and if it's large branches you have cut it is likely to bleed more, if it continues you need to cauterise the cuts with a blow torch.
