I've had good results with bulbs in wet seasons by pre-planting in trays of compost.
Standard plastic trays are the best, place the bulbs upright in the trays, close together. Cover with compost, firm in with fingers, water well and keep trays in the shade or on the greenhouse floor. They will start to root and can be planted out as soon as required with a handful of sharp sand in each hole.

Keep them in paper bags in a cool, dry place where mice/slugs and/or snails can't get at them!
