I have recently been given a peris, about 5FT tall and well established in a large container. Also a small camellia in a container. The peris is just coming into flower and the camellia has small buds. Is now the right time to feed them ?

Well it wont hurt and you use the same feed for them both I think ! I use a rhodedendron feed.

No, its a waste of time and money to feed them right now. No shrub or tree should be fed before March or April, when the growing season is underway. Take up of nutrients won't be happening yet, and even if its started early, the last thing you want is your plant to absorb too much nitrogen at this stage, forcing sappy new growth at a time of year when its likely to be hit by frost. So wait, please.

Thanks Bamboo.I've never been sure about flowers this time of year. Should you feed winter flowering pansies as a matter of interest ? Never sure about those either ?

No. I understand why there's the confusion - its flowering, so it must growing. They aren't - if you bought your winter pansies in, say, October, as big as they are then is as big as they're going to get in terms of leaves, until the following spring. Flowers opening and dropping has nowt to do with the plant itself growing, and despite being called 'winter' pansies, they, like everything else, rest during cold and dark times of the year. As a general rule, nothing should be fed past beginning to mid July - by then, the year has turned and days are shortening - any growth forced by feeding will not have time to harden off before cooler temperatures start.

By the way, your Pieris won't need much in the way of feed - just a handful of Growmore stirred into the top compost in April should be fine, although you can do the same again 6 weeks later if you want to.
