When is the right time of year to cut back chrysanthemums, last year i did it in the spring but that means they look untidy all winter.

When you can see new growth at the base - they usually produce that before the winter, so it's up to you. I normally do mine once the flowers are dead, but in severe weather, the top growth might protect the new shoots - so I left them this year.
