When you say 'small bed', how small? Because if you want a plant for screening purposes, that implies something largeish (as mentioned by Kildermorie, i.e, Fatsia, Aucuba, etc) but none of these should be planted less than 2 feet away from a wall, and preferably 3.

Also, Choisya ternata 'Sundance', with lovely bright lime/yellow leaves.

Escalonia or how about Garryia eliptica, but depends on the size of the bed. Julien

Spotted laurel, which many people dislike, but mine brightens up a very dark, north-facing corner with its yellow-splashed leaves and bright red berries.

You can also try some Japanese plants like Fatsia Japonica, Aucuba Japonica, Bamboo such as the Murielae and Mahonia.
Jacobs ladder, Eunonymous and Hostas will add colour and different shades of greed.
