I have a book on the protea family that says it will take
-4C in well-drained soil. Trevena Cross Nursery in Cornwall sell it and they are very helpful so it may be worth contacting them (www.trevenacross.co.uk).
I have been growing banksia marginata successfully in East Berkshire - it was planted in March 2006

My NSW friends, who are here on holiday, are going to send me some seed. They say that inland in Broken Hill, they never, ever see it and even in Sydney it only grows happily right by the coast in VERY sandy soil. So based on that, as I am right by the sea, I must set up some phony sandy soil (mine is fertile clay) and I will keep GoY informed. Probably in about 5 years. LoL.

I think this is the coastal banksia. I had one but now you've asked ........? It has disappeared. I have friends here from NSW. One of them is a great gardener. I'll ask her in the next few days when I see her and get back to you. Very interesting.......
