I seem to have a lot of problems this year!!

I've been ignoring the fact for a while that my front lawn is grotty. Last year, painstakingly hubby dug up, and way down, this two sided lawn, by hand, no rotovator. He removed all stones etc., worked in lots of good stuff and after several weeks planted Grass Seed.
Unfortunately I tended one border too quickly and the beautiful lush grass vanished forever. Now on the part nearest the road which is lined with trees all we have is "mud" and tufts of grass, This happened because two of the trees are Crab Apples which deposits hundreds as they fall and have to be raked up.

What to do. We do not fancy paving and that would be expensive and if we go for another lawn, same problem.
We have thought of laying a huge net to catch the apples but that does not seem very practical, bit hit and miss. Latest thought is to widen the border to take in the messy area, but then it would mean picking apples off the border.

Helppppppppppp!! anyone with a wonderful idea to solve this messy problem.

Hi dreeny, would you consider filling that area with some nice decorative stone/shingle? Easy enough to do and not overly expensive, it also looks very nice when done properly with perhaps some planting.

That is what I was going to suggest too... It could look very effective.
