Unhappy conifer. A friend has sent me a picture of a conifer in her garden. It's not looking happy. Is it dead or can it be rescued?
Thanks for your advice.

Looks like wind damage to me. It will not turn green again as it has died in those parts. You could trim it to remove the brown growth.

The vast majority of conifers ( and certainly this one) will not regenerate from branches without leaves. If there is any green on the branches below the dead leaf it will regenerate if not it won't.
I'd do as Kildermorie says. Trim off the dead and see if it looks acceptable.
Also: Is it brown on the other side? If not you could turn it round ,trim off the dead and it may look acceptable.

It's a Cupressus macrocarpa, and probably the cultivar 'Wilma' very badly marketed as a container plant. Very susceptible to over watering and root rot in containers, should be in the ground really, can't say I've ever seen an established healthy specimen in a pot. My advise is to dump the plant and try something more suitable for container culture.
