How to propagate and establish Polypodium Vulgare (Common Polypody)? It is apparently one of our most adaptable and versatile native evergreen ferns, which I am about to order from Crocus.co.uk. They say simply to "Wrap rhizomes in moss and tie to suitable rooting medium and keep moist until establishes". So I assume they will just send me rhizomes. I'm not sure what they mean by a suitable rooting medium (possibly a gritty humus) or 'tying to'. Will I need to order a bag of moss to (expensive), or is there a cheaper material which will substitute. I'm looking forward to the challenge. It apparently grows about a foot tall and spreads easily if happy. Just what I need. Can any clever folk advise? Much appreciated.

Hi Owdboggy, It is hard to visualise how the rhizomes will be until they arrive, rhizomes being such variable funny wotsits. But I have made a note of this information in my 'gardening notes book' and will attempt to apply it when they come. Many thanks indeed.

Those directions sound suspiciously like instructions for starting an epiphyte. Are you sure that you are getting what you think you are getting?

All I have ever used is ordinary potting compost in the past. I think what they mean is to find some method of pegging the rhizomes down until they establish. Bent pieces of garden wire (into a 'U' shape would do) pushed into the compost should do the trick. As for moss, never needed to use it. but any old scraped up stuff would do it. After all it is only to keep the thing moist until it gets its roots down.
