I'm puzzled - I do hope there's another Geranioholic out there who can help! Please does anybody know the name of this beautiful purple geranium? I thought it was a G. nodosum, but I can't ID it.

Hi Spritz
Is it Geranium kashmir
Steve

Nope, sorry Steve. I have 'Kashmir Purple'(and Pink..) and the leaves and flower shape are different. This is growing happily in shade, too.
It is lovely, Pam, and I got a surprise when the flowers opened today! :-)

The leaves do look like nodosum. Not seen this coloured flower before though. Is it definitely attached to the nodosum leaf? Sorry if this sounds patronising spritz, just want to make sure Lol. :)

Could it have geranium pyrenacium in the parentage?

Yes, totally, utterly. I am wondering to myself if it could be G. nodosum 'Whiteleaf', but minus the pale edges to the petals. What do you think?

Ooops - sorry Andrew - I was answering Fractal!
I don't know - is that a possibility? Do they hybridise?

they are very closely related so i dont see why they wouldnt hybridise.

Interesting theory! :-))

It looks like a cross between G.nodosum and G. pyrenaicum but this is not likely at all. I could only find 1 cross involving pyrenaicum and none involving nodosum. Geranium nodosum 'whiteleaf' is variety of nodosum: this plant is known for producing flowers of a variable colour.
Geranium pyrenaicum is in sub-genus Robertium (section Batrachioidea) and Geranium nodosum is in the sub-genus Geranium (section Sylvaticum).
If it produes some seed, it would be well worth collecting and germinating them.
I would love some photos of the stems, root system, and more information about the habit ofthe plant: evergreen, perennial, flowering period, photos of un-opened flower buds, etc.
I wouldn't mind having a small plant to grow as well!
If i have something you may like, let me know and we could do a swap??

I simply haven't time to get all the info you'd like at the moment, Geraniumdad - because the garden is open on Thursday. However, I'm fully intending to see if it produces seed. I realise that they might not come 'true', but it would be good to have a go.
I had come to the conciusion that it 'must' be G. n. 'Whiteleaf', simply because I note on a chart where I plant each Geranium, and that's where 'Whiteleaf' is supposed to be, in spite of the lack of the pale edges to the flowers.
If I'm over in that area of the garden with my camera, I'll try to remember to take photos of the stems and buds.
Thank you for your input, which is helpful. :-)
