the snow damaged my cordyline so i cut the damaged top off and it now stands at approx 1.5 metres with about 40 shoots coming from the top of the stump, can you advise on what to do as it looks a bit spooky.

A bit spooky, nice, lol! If you don't want so many shoots, strip some off with the secateurs, removing them at the base where they join the trunk, leaving however many you want behind. They will eventually form their own, separate branches on top of the main trunk.

Well, there's hope for the rest of us after all then... I am awaiting to see if mine shoots back, but only recently cut it...
