we are having problems with a catterpillar lookalike pest,they are eating the shoots on our hedge and there hundreds of them,could you please tell me what they are and how do we get rid of thm. many thanks

Why do you say 'caterpillar look a likes' they are doubtless the caterpillars of something possibly a saw fly. You either let them be to eat themselves to the point where they pupate or spray. They wont kill the hedge but it will look messy.

Post a photo of the culprits, close enough for ID - you don't want to kill of caterpillars that could turn into moths or butterflies, but you might want to treat for sawfly larvae before they decimate the hedge
