Hanging Jasmine

Ma, United States

A few years ago I was lucky enough to find a 5 Star Jasmine hanging plant. I absolutely loved it. It was ironically the first plant I was able to keep alive. I gave it to a friend of mine to bring to her mother (who was in a nursing home). It didn't make it. I have been unable to find it (as a hanging plant). I would like to know if anyone here knows where I can find one not trained around a hoop. Or if I could get some more information about this beautiful plant. I would love to fill my home with all different kinds of Jasmine. Especially since the only space I have outside is a small balcony (in Massachusetts). As far as I've been able to make out the plants Genus name is Jasminum & the Species: polyanthum. Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Jasmine. I'm sure if you were in the UK I could find you one but may I suggest that if you can only find one 'trained round a hoop' in the States, that you get one and untrain it. I answered a question yesterday from someone in the States, zone 7 who wanted to grow a gardenia jasminoides, not the same thing at all, but they both smell gorgeous. I suggested a standard jasmine but if you want this one as a hanging plant then just get one and take that dreadful hoop off it. I too hate plants (or animals) that are trained to do unnatural things. Actually I don't hate the plants or animals. Just the people who do it.

Hi John,
Thanks for the pointer, I will have to take the Jasmine off the hoop. I have to agree with you about plants or animals being trained to do unnatural things. Like putting clothes on pets for one but, even worse is cutting their ears to stand up and cutting their tails off! How cruel! What is a standard Jasmine? As you can see, I am a novice gardener.

Standard really means just a normal plant. It doesn't trail or climb or creep or ramble. It is usually just a small bush. It is just the plant as it was originally.

By the by. A neighbour (sorry you are in the US - neighbor) of mine, who has cocker spaniels, just refused to sell someone a puppy (there are 5) because she came to see them and immediately announced that she would have it taken to the vets to have its tail docked. So we bought the neighbo(u)r and her husband dinner. - LOL.

Good luck.

Hi John,
I think it's great that your neighbour refused to sell the puppy to prevent it from having it's little tail cut off. It was really nice of you and your wife to take them out to dinner. Sorry it took me so long to write back. Hope you and your family had a great holiday season.

Hi Simi. Welcome to GoY. Ummm. Don't be offended but if you put your mouse pointer over the avatar of people you will see where they are from. Jasmine is from Maine in the U.S. and Isis is also from across the pond so she really wants an American supplier. Even seasoned GoYers sometimes forget to check. Lol.
