We have in our garden not only a pink and purple aquilegia but to our surprise we also have a red one! Are the red ones quite common? Also will it almost certainly come back next year??
Thank you!

I'm not an expert Jini, just a keen beginner and from what I have learnt/read already on this forum is that Aquilegia will self seed and the seedlings will not be the same as the parent plant. It's just the luck of the draw I think.
I have a few that have appeared this way. They will come back next year. You should be able to propogate by division once the plant is mature enough.

nice one, aquilegias self seed a lot, most will return the following year... good luck

With a bit of luck it will .Let it self-seed and see what comes up. This year I have loads of pink ones that have appeared , mostly having had shades of mauve and purple before , so you can never tell with them.

I have several dark red ones, all self seeded.

I think it's a fabulous plant and I get great pleasure every year, seeing what variations it can come up with.
This year I went round the garden with my camera and recorded at least five completely different variations.
