perhaps i need to try that watering with a bottle so the water gets straight to the roots?

Wouldn't hurt, or create a bund all around the plant about a foot out and 6 inches high. Fill this with water and let it soak in. Make sure the soil within the bund is loosened on top to allow the water to get right down into the soil.

ok, thank you ~ its very fine soil and free draining.

Then keep very well watered! And consider not planting at this time of year!

Astrantias always flag in very dry conditions, they do need to be kept well watered, give it plenty of water and it will soon perk up, cut the dead flowers away for prolonged flowering.

They do better if they get some shade. I have some in shade and they are doing great. Others were planted in the sun but didn't do well until the surrounding plants created the shade they needed.

I bought 4 different astrantia this year, I read that the slugs don't like them - this is a major positive in making my mind up for me.
Glad it has perked up a bit sticki :) What a difference a bit of water and a day make!
