I wxpect I will regret asking this as I bet the answer is simple, just like the questioner, but what does LOL stand for. I keep seeing it in others comments, answers etc. Please educate a simpleton.

I wondered for a while, then decided it must be - lots of laughs. Hope I'm right - perhaps we can be simpletons together.

Laugh out loud?

4 Feb, 2009

'Laugh out loud' or in other circumstances 'Lots of Love.'

4 Feb, 2009

LOL - Laughing Out Loud. A 21st Century [or sarcastic]way of saying Ha, Ha - usually used in text speak, which is becoming increasingly common in other forms of written communication!!
Hope this helps.

Toto - here's another variation for you.
I told my m-in-law that it meant little old lady, and all of a sudden she stopped using it!
I use it like you might just use one of the sideways smiley symbols - : ) or : )))) or ; ) that one is someone winking or my daughter does ;p which is meant to be someone sticking their tongue out!!
Really it's just a happy, friendly little thing. I don't take it as being sarcastic.
Btw, btw means by the way.
