I grew runner beans in pots this year, partly for the pretty red and white flowers. I can't, however, eat them fast enough to keep up with the production!
I am thinking of trying peas in pots next year but would like something pretty as well as tasty - any suggestions please?

Pick the flowers before they fall if you do, or you might try eating sweet pea seeds! (Though they don't look the same really)

Freeze the glut! Or make them the 'star' of tasty lunches, like - served with small pieces of crispy bacon; or with pulped tomatoes and garlic and crusty bread. :o)

I would with pleasure Nariz but only have a fairly small freezer. Now that I am growing more produce I am looking out for a small cheap secondhand one to put in the garage because when I have visitors from the UK and elsewhere I already struggle freezer-wise.

Know what you mean! We now have THREE freezers to take care of things that come our way, like wild boar, a whole goat, a whole lamb, pork joints, a glut of beans and tomatoes, plums, peaches, nectarines, apples and pears ....... ! Sometimes I wonder what we did before we moved here!

Before anyone had freezers we used to salt down our beans. You cut them up as usual and then layer them in a big jar with alternate layers of salt. You have to wash well to get the salt out before you cook them, but they keep for months like that.

Peas would probably be more difficult for the 'pretty' effect as they tend to just come in white and the flowers don't last very long. How about putting one sweet pea in each pot along with the eating peas?
