Protection of Tulips

Could you give me some tips as to how to protect my tulips from being eaten by garden pests. They are just beginning to come through now and last year at this stage the new shoots were eaten by something (mice, squirrels?) and never really flowered satisfactorily.

Yes I agree. Whenever I plant bulbs in the garden or in pots the squirrels come and try and dig them up so now we always cover them with sections of wire mesh , pushed in round the edges so its firm. The green coated kind looks nicer. When the bulbs are through and a few inches tall we find it is safe to remove the wire mesh.

I sometimes get slug damage always on my favorite ones. I had a problem with squirrels a few years ago eating my Pagoda lilies and i resorted to puting chicken wire mesh 'cages' over them until they were about 3in tall. the squirrels didnt seem to bother nibbling after that.
do you get rabbits in the garden? they would certainly give tulips a go. again mesh would sort them too.
hope this helps
