my parsnip plants have good growth of leaves but the parsnips are very stunted ( good girth, but about 1.5 inches long) can i use them for anything. It is our first attempt with a veggie plot and the soil is very heavy clay .

You can actually use the parsnip leaves in soups and casseroles. Your stunted parsnip roots are also edible. Parsnips and carrots need a very fine sandy soil to grow well, I think you wil always have a challenge on clay.
