Can you plant heather alongside dwarf hebes in a narrow border. How do you think it would look?

You can provided your soil is reasonably acid (for the heathers). It would look OK to me, but it's your garden and you're entitled to plant whatever things together that you like. How narrow is "narrow"? These plants will still bush out even if the label says "dwarf".

Thanks Beattie. Not really sure what to do. Trying to keep costs down because I have a big garden. The border is about 50 cm wide. It has a variety of perennials in it at the mo but it looks untidy and needs an overhaul.

Hebes will fill out to 50cm given time and space, depending on type. Heather can spread over time as well - but needs to be cut back to stop them getting leggy. With some space between them I think that they would look good together.

I would find the Hebes that you like best and go from there. I mix them with Hardy Geraniums as mine are quite small still. Bedding flowers and small spring bulbs like Crocus also go well.

I have dwarf hebes behind winter heathers and they are all doing well. I don't know the variety of hebe - they have very small reddish leaves and bright blue flowers all summer.
Winter flowering heathers are a lot less fussy about acid soil than the summer ones and mine are growing well in soil that's barely the acid side of neutral. You can get a good mix of dark green, light green and yellow foliage so even though there are no heather flowers in summer the bed is always neat and colourful.

Any colour as long as it's natural - am I the only one who shudders when looking at those poor little painted heathers in the GC?

No you aren't, they are horrible.

Thanks again everyone. They 'paint' heather!?

Surely you've seen them? The perpetrators take small heather plants growing in pots and dip the plants in paint, then ship them out to the shops. The result looks like a playgroup's been let loose on them. Probably intended to bring a touch of vibrant colour to your winter garden. Horrible! To me, anyway.

And they don't grow afterwards either.

My neighbur bought lots of different coloured ones thinking that that was their natural colour(!). As if Heather comes in bubble gum pink and neon green and blue.

Wow! Looked at the picture and have never seen them! I'm from Scotland though so we probably tend to have the real thing.

We have the real thing here too, but it doesn't stop them being on sale. Presumably someone buys them.

How do I say thanks?
