I have a cabbage palm which survived the bad winter but has bark damage half way up the trunk. The bark has gone from half the tree, facing south. the damage may have been caused by a neighbours cat climbing the tree repeatedly. How can I cover it to keep infections out? Thanks Catriona Thomson

Damage is much more likely to be from the bad winter - do you have healthy growth above that point? If you do, then just leave it - if we have the winter that I've seen forecast, the likelihood is you'll be chopping the whole thing down to the ground come spring anyway, it's supposed to be worse than last year.
