Usually 1.8m to rear garden and 1.2m to front but leave 10mm or more between boards as this stops them taking full force of wind and as Drc says stay away from larch lap panels as they dont last as long .

Picket fencing, painted white or stained looks good in many settings, depends on your house style. They tend to be 75cm tall and come either made up as panels or individual bits of wood. As someone who has painted these fences in the past, they take a long time to paint.

Bear in mind that your neighbour will be looking at the 'back' of the fence, so some agreement may be required. You could put up 'hit and miss' fencing with boards at back and front overlapping the wider spaces between them. This gives both sides of the fence a finished look.

Close boarding with a 6" shingle board would last much longer than the cheaper panels of Lap fencing. Depends how much you want to spend? Also check local by laws for the front, but most back fencing can be up to 2 meters in height ion the UK?
