It depends how big and shady the tree is, Ydinverno. We have managed to keep a couple of clematis going underneath ours, but I have to be honest and say they'd probably have done a bit better with more sunshine. I don't think the fig tree will be hungry - the roots tend, as I understand it, to go down almost vertically, so don't impoverish the surrounding soil so much.
