Agree crab apple far too lat in the year for cherries. You could make a jelly to go with meat dishes.

Cherries don't have that 'dint' in the bottom. Agree that this is a crab apple.

Thanks everyone, the tree is in the middle of dartmoor (Ashburton). it's size of fruit is about 1/2" I will go back up and check again :)

Sue you don't need to unless you want to collect some of the fruit - definitely a crab apple as Bulba pointed out cherries do not have a 'dint' in the bottom.

It's not a cherry, I think it's a crab apple. You could pick one and cut it in half to see if it's got a typical apple core. Pretty, isn't it! We're having a great year for apple crops - the wild ones along the roads are laden with fruit.
