Tulip bulb planting....
I have just taken deliver of 300 mixed tulip bulbs which have been donated to the village by our local GC.
The girl has no idea which tulips they are. I have been reading that now is a bit too early for planting but this weekend is about the only weekend we can all get together, so I can't do much about that.
Bearing in mind we don't know which bulbs they are how much spacing and depth should be left? They all look like normal sized bulbs. Thanks

Hi Scottish given where you live I would get on and plant the tulips now. Most advice is based on south of England.

Plant them 6 inches deep Scottish. You can go a a bit deeper if the soil is light, but not really any shallower than 6 inch.

Planting from November on, is ideal for Tulips but where you are I would think they will be no problem now and you need to do it before the ground gets too hard anyway. Plant about 3 times the depth of the bulb, planting quite close together in groups of at least 30 or a drift of at least 8 deep to give a bold splash of mixed colours.

Drc by November there is the potential of not being able to plant at all! Up here in the north we plant a month or even two before you lot!

Go for it before to frost and snow arrives - which we will get soon if the weather predictions are right

Scottish I would plant them closer than advise but would also plant them three times the depth of the bulb. Just have fun and create big, tight, plantings... nothing worse, in my, opinion, that bulbs dotted around.

Drc and MG....Thanks again, I will follow both your advice and plant in large drifts, close so to form tight 'clumps'
Like you MG I don't like them dotted around adding no impact.
Cheers x
