what small evergreen plants would do well in a dry south facing border,approx 5ftx14ft also planted through weed suppresant and mulched with bark chips?

Herbs, I find, seem to do quite well, especially the coloured sages and rosemary, assuming you can keep them well clipped to keep them in order.
