Hi Scottish GoYers, did you know that all paying Historic Scotland sites are open for free this weekend, for St Andrew's weekend. This includes the expensive ones like Edinburgh Castle, Stirling Castle, Linlithgow Palace etc.
To qualify you need to apply for a pass at this site:

I know that this is a bit late but I have only just found out about it.

Just remember to register and get your pass first... Up north where we are most of the properties are ruins but we plan on visiting a couple weather permitting.

Thanks, Bulbaholic. Good to know. Quite a few of these around here.

Sweet! Thanks for the tip. Always fancied visiting Linlithgow Palace.

Do you think that they will allow English people to visit? ;o)

No idea, but probably not, it is the Scottish gov. that has initiated this event and you do have to give your address and have i.d. on you.

Anyone can apply for the free pass - it is paid via the Scottish Government as a gift for St Andrews day. So anyone visiting from the RoUK or abroad can get into some pricey attractions (Edinburgh Castle is normally £15 each) for free all weekend.

I wish the Scottish Gov would shift it to a less wet and cold day! August or July would be better weather wise.

Looks like there could be several impromptu GoY Meets this weekend, Lol.
Enjoy!

We have just come back from our visit to Spynie Palace. Not cold and wet but very windy. If it stays dry we hope to go to Urquhart Castle by Loch Ness tomorrow; a very exposed location.

Enjoy BA...Urquhart Castle is very lovely and eerie!

Ah well the blattering rain and wind means we decided again Urquhart Castle but we did revisit Fort George and managed to be inside each time the heavens opened.

Good decision!

We had a great day out at Sterling Castle - thanks for the tip off!

Glad that you benefitted, Kildermorie.
Remember that Historic Scotland do a similar free weekend sometime at the end of the winter, just before the main tourist season starts.
