Hi all I need some advise again. I have taken up woodturning for a winter hobby and I have been mixing some of the shavings in with my compost but now that things have slowed up in the garden I am producing more shavings than can be mixed with kitchen waste alone . Does anyone know if I could use them as a mulch to help protect some of the more tender perenials from the Aberdeenshire winter.

Why not! I buy bags of forest bark to surpress weeds and that is all wood it will rot down and the worms pull it down.

Agree with Maggy, no reason not to.

The wood you are using for turning must be seasoned wood rather than green, and hopefully not treated timber.. This should be fine to use as a mulch and should behave rather like straw.

Which may mean adding a little extra nitrogen in spring. The wood shavings will "eat" part of what is in your soil as they decay.

Thankyou all very much I did think it would be ok but then the doubts creep in so I thought I would ask on here.
And yes Bulbaholic it is all local timber & all seasoned I am glad I can use it as I hate waste of any kind & sadly the local mushroom farm has closed so no more mushroom mulch either.

So thanks again all and have a good Xmas & New Year and lets hope for a milder Winter than last and a better Summer

I'd reiterate tugbrethil's point - very important that you add nitrogen (Growmore or similar will do) to the soil in Spring or your plants will be deprived of nitrogen as the wood shavings break down.

Hi thanks again for the advice and especially to Tugbrethil & Bamboo but I always add a good sprinkling of pelleted poultry manure every spring anyway. I might give it a light sprinkle now aswell.

Thanks again
