What should i do with Phoenix canariensis next?

United Kingdom

Hi i have purchased a Phoenix yesterday at B&Q. It cost around £15 and is maybe just under 1ft tall. I have seen these in gardens in my area during some very cold winters and the owners had them in the ground without protection, so I would like to do the same, but i am unsure when to plant it because it is only April (2009) and the weather can still turn! I need to plant soon because it is in a rediculously small pot!

You could always pot on to a larger size pot until you think its warm enough to put in the garden, but i would have thought as its in a pot you can plant anytime of year.

I think this plant will not stand frost. My daughter has a couple on the boards outside a shed in the UK Midlands, and they have not survived. Mine is in a frost-free greenhouse and is OK.

How do I say thanks?
