I have cut back mine today. I have gone down to the sign of the lowest bud or group of young leaves on each branch and also cut out the oldest and woodiest branches. Cutting back hard is recommended for buddleias.

I cut mine down to about 2ft or above a strong shoot. some of the new growth can be potted up as cuttings and as an insurance should you manage to kill the parent.

Hi
From my experience (and I'm no expert) buddleia cannot be killed even if you want to! I've hacked a few right down in my time and we have a very old woody one at our current home. It has been sawn right down and it simply sprouts again. If you do it now, it will set the flowers back by a short while but the bonus is it'll be flowering into the Autumn months.
