roses, hardy geraniums, choisyia ternata, oriental poppies, golden hop, mock orange, crocosmia, hellebores, lilac, hazel, apples, butterfly bush, weigelia all do well on my heavy soil. If you dig in plenty of grit and add lots of soil improver such as homemade compost and manure every year it will improve. The main problem I have is that it dries rock hard in the summer so plenty of mulching needed. If you check my pics that may help.
