Hi....I would like advice please on which shrub i could plant in an area approx 4ft from my fence, its a corner area at the bottom of the garden and gets the morning sun through most of the day. I would like an evergreen with flowers and something that wont grow into a monster...Thank you..

Have a look at Nandina, Motinot . . . evergreen, very pretty leaves with red/bronze markings most of the year, tiny white flowers followed by red berries. There are two varieties, one dwarf, the other gets to 6 feet. (2 tall ones on my pics, first page). Happy in any situation!

If your soil isn't too alkaline, any of the Pieris japonica hybrids - ones like Pink Delight have loads of flowers, others, like Flaming Silver, have flowers and white rimmed leaves, attractive all year round. Careful which you choose though- ultimate height and spread varies depending on the variety - Flaming Silver doesn't make much more than about 5 or 6 feet though.
I'm a bit confused by your question in that you appear to be saying the area gets morning sun and then sun for most of the day -if it is sunny most of the day, don't choose a Pieris forrestii variety. If it only gets morning sun and its a sheltered spot, Crinodendron hookeranium. Otherwise its the usual suspects - Choisya ternata Sundance, Hebe Great Orme or 'Hidcote', Berberis darwinii, Olearia. Or what about Carpenteria californica 'Ladham's Variety' - or Cistus corbariensis or C. Peggy Sammons for something shorter...

Evergreen shrubs and an east facing aspect could cause a few problems with frosted leaves in the winter/spring and dew later which could scorch the leaves with the early morning sun. If it is south facing then Bamboo's suggestion of Carpenteria californica 'Ladham's Variety' would be a stunner which most of your neighbours would never have seen.

Thank you all for the great suggestions...I shall investigate all of them....Andy, i had a lovely specimen of Fatsia J in a pot my nephew fell in love with it so he has it now....Sheila i lost my Nandina Domestica 'firepower' last year, but i will look at other varieties....Sorry Bamboo...Its a South facing aspect, sun all afternoon.....I do have a C.'sundance' a little further away which i grew from a cutting and its doing really well..I adore Hebes, but im going to check out the Carpenteria, thank you....and thanks to you too Jimmy.....:>)

Would Photinia be any good?

I think it would be lovely Grandmage...Would it get very big?

About 13 feet tall... unless you choose Photinia Little Red Robin instead.

13f tall would be too tall Bamboo...The area is inside my fence at the front of the house...The fence is only chest high...., i'll check out 'little red robin'...thank you..:>)

Shrubs can be kept trimmed Moti. They dont have to be left to grow too tall! Red robins are beautiful in colour allyear round and their flowers delightful.

Might as well get the right size one though, Grandmage - 'Little Red Robin' looks exactly like the ordinary Red Robin - just smaller.

Yes Bamboo, good thinking.

Lol....Thanks ladies...The previous shrub was Spirea 'snowmound' and it grew way over the fence onto the street...I had to keep it pruned flush with the fence and it ruined its shape..OH dug it out last week (with some difficulty) so i intend to plant something more managable.....:>)
