I have seen a blackbird pecking deep holes and destroying my beautiful lawn. Please advise as I am stressed out.

Hi Abda, They are just searching for grubs etc. they need their food as they are ground feeders, I look at it this way, it saves you aerating your lawn, the birds are doing it for you.

Yes I agree. They do the same in my garden. They pick up all the food the pesky starlings knock of the bird tables too!

Ah, but we do love them really Scot.

If you feed the blackbirds in the worst part of the year for them they will be less inclined to dig for worms .

If they can get rid of leatherjacket grubs (Daddy Longlegs) in your lawn, you should be singing their praises!

Remember that song by the Wurzels - "Blackbird! Oi'll 'ave 'ee?" I sing that to myself every morning when I have to sweep the earth back onto the flowerbeds from the path where Blackie has thrown it in his search for beasties! But I do appreciate him finding breakfast and saving my plants from being munched.. :o)

Starlings do this in mine. It does no harm and as Grandmage says I give thanks they are saving me the trouble of aerating it. When you start mowing agin the holes should disappear.

Thank you all for the valuable comments. Hoping as Steragram says, holes will disappear when I start mowing.

The blackbirds can dig up all of my lawn if it helps them to survive the winter.

If blackbirds are digging up your lawn at this time of year, then you must have a healthy lawn, full of worms etc, which will be aerating it and feeding it. It is a lot better and cheaper than having an artificial plugging and aerator come in!! The 'mess' will soon disappear once you start mowing again. If the holes are deep then some loam soil applied in the spring, well trodded in, and a few grass seeds will quickly solve the problem for the summer.
