Can anyone recommend a garden centre in glasgow/lanarkshire/ lothian area? Or can anyone recommend an online supplier? Just new to this and nit sure where to go later on when i am ready to buy plants/seeds

If you go the online route, then I would recommend that you steer well clear of thompson & morgan, I was VERY disappointed with everything I bought from them last year, and will not be buying anything else from them.

Online plants tend to be smaller than you can get in a garden centre as they have to be posted. You cannot also look for a healthy specimen. I have not had any problems with online suppliers for bulbs and seeds.

Dobbies is all over the UK, there are 2 in Glasgow, Milngavie and Braehead. They are quite expensive but I know many who swear by them. You can also get bargains in B&Q and Homebase. Morrisons can be a good source as well, though standards differ between stores.

@ Derek and kenny - Thompson & Morgan and Van Meuwen are the same company. A lot of online suppliers such as Guardian Garden shop and Telegraph are fronts for J.Parker Bulbs.

Spalding are OK but they send loads of weird letters with 'you have won X' and 'free plant' with this voucher scam like post, would only buy if you get an offer.

A final comment from me, I would NEVER buy plants from a website unless I had already had dealings with them - sorry I want to see what I am buying!

I too will recommend Binny Plants. Well worth a visit especially at peony flowering time.

If you buy seeds from Thompson & Morgan or any other large seed company and they have failed, then send the empty seed packets back as I have found that they will replace them. Many of the mail order shrubs that are sold are infact small plants or 'liners' which are a wholesale product which nurseries buy to grow-on. I have found that bedding plug plants are usually pretty good from mail order companies. But the answer is, where possible, always buy plants where you can see what you are buying first.
