Having replanted a lot of plants, the stones are all underneath the soil. What is the best method of returning the stones to the surface?

not that they will do any harm .

Nope they wont but if the stones were there as a decorative feature then it would have made sense to remove before planting.

perhaps buying fresh stone would be easier and whilst at the gc buying the stone you'll be tempted to buy more plants :o)
perfect excuse in my book :o)

Karen won't have to mess her plants about again Nosey, or at least I hope she knows that - all she has to do is remove loose soil and seive that. Any stones deeper down where the rootballs are will just have to stay there!

Well, there isn't one - the best would have been to rake them off before replanting the area, and then replacing afterwards. Once they're mixed in with the soil, the only way is to remove the soil and seive it all to retrieve stones.
