Can anyone help me with this query please? When are Dahlia tubers ready for sale in garden centres - in particular Bishop of Llandaff? I need to reserve a couple for Partners' parents to pick up and bring over to me, so they need to be tubers rather than plants.

Nariz, they have been available in all the garden centres for a while..and if your partners parents have a Wilkinson's shop in their area..they almost always have a selection of Dahlias at cheap prices..I had an 'Arabian Night' from there, but don't know about 'Bishop of Llandaff',although it is a popular one. Some of the pound shops stock them too,so worth a try..:o)

Yes, they're available here, too.

I had a nice Dahlia from Wilkinson, too. Went in this weekend and they had been raided! I am not sure about the pound shop. I have had good seed and bits n bobs from them, but if you are having them brought from another country it might be a bit risky and annoying if you were disappointed. I have had bare root plants from them, some were fine and some where just bags of peat with a dead twig inside. It depends if the parents can pick good ones.
Are Dahlias not as popular in Spain? I would have thought they would be ideal over there?

So would I, Bryony, but we never see them in this region. I particularly want 'Bishop of Llandaff' as it's a bright coloured 'open' dahlia - good for the pollinating insects, and Partner is Welsh and has played rugby against Llandaff, so there's a 'connection.' I wanted to make sure the tubers were available at this time of year as Partner is now visiting his family in early May, so can bring a couple of tubers back with him - if Ryanair permits!!!!!
Bloomer, I think I'd rather put an order in at the good GC near to Partner's family than risk Wilkinsons or the like. I'm sure they're OK, but the good GC may be more reliable.
Thanks for all your responses, guys. :o)

I bought Bishop of Llandaff at Wyevale last week - they always go like hot cakes. Never yet found one in Wilkinsons - they have other red ones, but not BoL.

I think that's wise,Nariz..at least you will be sure ..and it will save your partner chasing all over the place..I suppose time will be precious to him..:o)

Won't they need to have been started into growth by May though? Not sure about the import/export regulations for plantlife, but if there are no problems I could send you a couple - but they do have to be declared on the customs label so you'd need to check. Any Goyers know the answer please?

There's no problem with plants within the EU. I've brought them back from both France and Holland

Wow, Steragram - thank you! That's very kind of you! Other GoYers have, in the past, sent me cuttings with no import restrictions so, as you say Andrewr, I would assume it would be OK. This is the first time of growing any kind of Dahlia for me, hence not being sure when or how they should be looked after. I'll PM you, Steragram. Thanks again! :o)
