Flowering rhubarb

My rhubarb has thrown up a large flower head.I have never grown rhubarb before, but no one on our allotment has seen this before any advise as what to do?

Rhubarb is usually grown to harvest the leaf stalks. The flowers are removed as soon as they appear so that all the plants energy goes into producing quality leaf stalks.

Actually I wouldn't bother - it's a bit weird (sort of like an ugly Astilbe bloom)! I found out because I was away from home for a couple of weeks once and my husband did absolutely nothing outside so I came back to a meadow where once there was lawn and a very tall Rhubarb flower...

Nope, agree to disagree, I would cut the flower off if you want to eat the rhubarb.

Someone had the same problem on the local radio gardening programe, he was told to cut it off as low as possible, Don`t twist it off cut it off.
apperently it is the warmer climate we live in and the high humdity.
