Surfinia or Petunia????? On asking my local GC for salmon coloured Surfinias he quoted, "sorry no trailing Surfinias but we have trailing Petunias , they are exactly the same". I have always thought they were the same family but different plants. Can someone clarify please.

From Google- 'Surfinia is a recent addition to the Petunia range'. So, the same but different? Doesn't really help, does it?

I think Surfinia is like a trade name for some more recent introductions of trailing petunias. Like Million Bells is a trade type name or title for a small flowered petunia with tiny leaves. Just keep looking, Ian if that's what you want. I had trouble tracking down million bells last year......third GC lucky.

Surfinia is a patented name for a certain strain of trailing petunias. I sometimes use trailing petunias and surfinias together, depending what colours I can find - but check the labels carefully, sometimes the eventual spread and trailing length vary.

Surfina in my experience have a smaller flower, whilst petunias are larger, and with dead-heading produce a longer flowering season for pots etc.

Not so, Avkg47 - there is a strain of surfinia, usually sold as sunpatens on the label somewhere, which do have smaller flowers. It's often hard to detect that you've bought the smaller variety without close examination of the label - I mistakenly bought the smaller one last year, but fortunately was able to change it with the supplier. Sometimes it might actually say mini surfinia, but not always.

Hi all,
Thankyou all for helping to clarify the differance.I am not sure I am there yet but today I went out and bought my Surfinia/ Petunias.(as on label)Hey and Bamboo they were called Mini Surfinias.I think at the end of the day they are very similar, slightly smaller flower and as you have all said Surfinias are certainly a new strain of Petunias. Thanks again.

The mini series do have slightly smaller flowers, and don't get so long.

I thought surfinias had a scent but i never noticed any on petunias?

The one that has a scent is purple trailing petunia, and the surfinia purple one. Never noticed any scent on any of the other colours.
