I remember some 60 years ago my father used to grow loads of great tomatoes in pots in his greenhouse, using garden soil,
So why buy compost at considerable cost from garden centres ?
This year I'm going to experiment using my improved garden soil, the stuff I've just rescued out of my compost bin (looks really good) and bagged compost.
Good idea ?

60 years ago no one bought compost and garden centres didn't exist. Should do fine.

For those gardeners who can remember that far back, don't you remember that people used to use steam sterilisers to treat their potting soil?

My father certainly didn't he mixed it up and used it.

Your are right, I remember my parents did the same, although they made their own compost and feed and rotated their crops a lot and all pots were scrubbed every spring.
