I have some small troughs 35cmx15cmx20cm deep.Would they be big enough for a courgette in each trough?

Yes, too shallow and narrow for courgettes. They would be much better for radishes, short carrots, mezclun, and possibly bush beans.

I doubt it. A bit small for the growth a courgette makes and the amount of water they need.
