I wouldn't bother with potatoes as by the time they mature they will be dirt cheap in the shops and will take up too much space to be worthwhile. My selection would be: tomatoes, peppers, French beans with lettuce growing inbetween or even courgettes.

That is quite a large container! Is this like a raised bed or is it independent? Mind you, once full of soil or compost, you won't be able to budge it, anyway. This year I have sown carrots in a very large 18" deep tub - it got round the problem of cold early on, and started off in the greenhouse, we haven't had the problem of carrot fly: We've tried several times before to grow them in ordinary beds, but they scarcely even germinated, so this looks like a useful tip for the future: we already have a lovely healthy display of carrot tops, so we hope they are growing away like mad below the surface! I LOVE baby carrots. I would think that salad crops like lettuce and rocket would do well, too, and small sowings of a crop like chard or baby spinach could be worthwhile.
