i have a fir tree bought as a christmas tree about ten years ago,i planted it in the garden and it has grown into a beautiful healthy tree about five feet tall and very dense due to trimminb back the new growth every year. The trunk is about 7 ins diameter. This week i noticed that the trunk at the bottom at ground level and for about 6ins upward seems to be dinted in and missing some of its bark exposing the inside it doesnt seem to be soft .Is there anything i can do to protect it and stop it getting worse ,it is such a healthy tree, full of new growth and i would hate to lose it

Do you use a strimmer? Could also be strimmer damage.

A close up picture of the damage would be useful, if only to establish whether the damage is a disease or possibly animal damage.
