my 3 year old victoria plum had many plums last year ,but before they ripen ,the tree shed nearly half of them ,as it's grown in a large pot(it's a special orchard pruned one and doesn't grow more than 6 feet) have I over or under watered it ,or is this another problem .?

It is quite common for plums and other prnus/malus species to shed young fruit in june. Its called 'June drop'. its to do with the natural hormones of the plant. it is a self thinning method ensuring some fruit ripen fully with the available nutrients.
Obviously if the tree becomes stressed that will add to the problem too. Dr bob's suggestion is a good one.

Can you cover the pot of your victoria plum with fleece to protect it's roots from the heat of the sun.Although you water it well, the root hairs which are against the side of the pot die in hot weather.
