How should I grow Amaryllis seeds

I have pods of fertilised amaryllis seeds, which will shortly burst into the plastic bags surrounding them. Has anyone tried growing these, and what's the best way, where and when?

Previous question
I did about 15yrs ago. the seed is black and papery. I let them fall on the surface of compost and let them get on with it. some germinated and the plants that grew survived for 3 yrs until i was on holiday and the caretaker forgot to take care. came back to find them all dead :o(
