got some at a car boot last summer,was lazy and left it out all winter in its pot but it survived ok--my mum tells me you can plant it in ponds and water features,is that right??

I wouldnt put it in the pond if it has a liner. The shoots can grow through it. But depends on the species, some can be very invasive and end up taking over. Research it carefully before you decide. I'd be tempted to pot it on into a bigger pot and see how it behaves.
